In response to Clive Thompson’s article “The New Literacy.”

Journal Prompt: Has your time spent on social media helped or hindered your writing ability?

My response:

“Between blogging, instagramming, and tweeting, social media plays a big role in my written communication.  I definitely think that time spent writing online, particularly blogging and tweeting, has made a positive impact on my writing skills.

While blogging has motivated me to express complex feelings and ideas to my followers, tweeting has challenged me to clearly get an idea across in 130 characters or less.  Both have noticeably improved my diction.

Knowing who my audience is can definitely affect the style and tone of my writing.  I write to effect an intimate feeling of friendship and connection with my readers on my blog, while on Twitter, I invent ways to shoot out sarcastic, humorous, and relatable monologue condensed into one or two sentences.

If I did not have any social media, I would most likely only write for school assignments.  Because of this, I concur with Thompson’s claims that my time and involvement spent writing online have improved my writing ability.”

{Wisdom}

“I have not learned wisdom,
Nor have I the knowledge of the Holy One.

Who has ascended to heaven and come down?
Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son’s name?
Surely you know!

Every word of God proves true;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”

Proverbs 30:3-5
