A flower – shrivelled, bare of fragrance,

Forgotten on a page – I see,

And instantly my soul awakens,

e863c3a111c8b72ed44a159d82c50aabFilled with an aimless reverie:

e14ea8e8cca6f41fff7e0ee247b53c54

When did it bloom? the last spring? earlier? How long?

9e4935ab635db1b71625f3868e1c85ac

Where was it plucked? By whom?

dc121a0e99ab5918547d9e264d3306e1

By foreign hands? or by familiar?

91b47dbda61955386d17befb6351c242

And why put here, as in a tomb?

242ebb9d317f9e5b94c20c20d0ffbcaf

To mark a tender meeting by it?

6083b2322bbbcc1a85a4633ee8444ac5

A parting with a precious one?

ae369fcc68a4b124551f0fd1326264de

Or just a walk, alone and quiet,

55cfc1c3447e47f2374805b07fe823a9

In forests’ shade? in meadows’ sun?

Is she alive? Is he still with her?

Where is their haven at this hour?

3f7cbbbbb61e19027fb77f5e854ca906

Or did they both already wither,

Like this unfathomable flower?
